What's so great about Instagram?
I found instagram a couple of years ago when I was having a month-long detox from Facebook (replace one addiction with another, right?).
I started off with a private profile, following other family and friends, a few celebs, and running pages such as @womensrunningcommunity. I connected with a few overseas women runners and before long had created another instagram profile (@k8__nz) to share solely running and fitness related posts.
I've since connected with all sorts of people - New Zealanders, other runners, other gymgoers, mothers (especially fellow mums of boys!), Christians, etc. Some of the most supportive people of my running and fitness journey are these people I've never met in real life. Their label is 'follower' but to me, they're friends.
The real beauty of instagram is you CHOOSE who to follow. You're not obligated to follow everyone you're related to, or used to be friends with back in high school... we've all got those people on our Facebook friends list! You can follow all those people that you actually gel with. The ones who are doing similar things to you. The ones who are doing totally amazing things you'll NEVER do (but you live vicariously through them). The ones who make you laugh on the daily. The ones who inspire you with their strength, courage and tenacity. Even the ones with totally amazing pictures and feeds that have a beautiful theme (wish I could be bothered with that!)
On instagram, you can post all your cheesy "just ran 5km" selfies, fake running photos and motivational quotes without worrying who will judge you. No one thinks you're up-yourself or tooting your own horn when you want to share your fastest/longest run, or your latest weights PB at the gym. We all celebrate in each others successes, but also comiserate in each others failures and testing times.
Come on over.. you'll love it.
